10 “S” for your eyes – THE EYE PROTOCOLS!
After examining thousands of patients and performing countless number of eye surgeries over the last 17 years, I have realized something very important.
Most people think a good vision depends on genetics or luck, but it does not.
The health of your eyes is largely determined by the choices you make every single day.
Many eye problems don’t appear overnight; they develop slowly because of small habits we repeat every day. That’s why I created what I call “THE EYE PROTOCOL – 10 simple, science backed habits that can help protect your vision for years to come!!
1.SLEEP
Our eyes work all day, especially in today’s world. We are continuously on digital screens (mobiles, ThinkPads, iPad, laptops, computers) either for work or entertainment purposes.
Our eyes need proper rest and for that a good sleep of atleast 8 hours is essential for our eyes to feel well rested.
2. SCREENS
When we work on any digital screen our eye muscles have to do extra work to see clearly for near, this results into eyestrain and headaches.
We tend to blink less when on digital screens that induce dry eyes.
To prevent all these issues, one must follow the 20-20-20 rule that every 20 minutes looks 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
3. SUNGLASSES
Chronic exposure to ultraviolet light induces early cataract and age-related macular degeneration.
Sunglasses with 100% UVA & UVB protection are non-negotiable. Sunglasses are like sunscreen to our eyes.
4. SUGAR
If you have diabetes, control your blood sugar and never skip your regular eye check-ups. Diabetes can cause diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to blindness.
5. SMOKING
Chronic smoking can develop early cataract, retinal degeneration, and optic neuropathy. Quitting is one of the best things you can do for your vision.
6. SUPPLEMENTS
Eat a balanced diet rich in green leafy vegetables, colored fruits. Omega three fatty acids,
Vitamin A, C, D, E, B12, micronutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin are essential for good eye health.
7. SAFETY
Wear protective eyewear during sports, work like construction work, factories, welding or household activities like cooking, dusting. Most eye injuries are preventable.
8. STRESS
Take regular breaks from the screen and manage stress; both can contribute to eye fatigue and discomfort. Stress also causes eyelid twitchings.
One can do yoga, meditation, workouts, and walk to relieve stress.
9. SYMPTOMS
Never ignore sudden blurry vision, flashes of light, new floaters, pain, or redness. Early treatment can save your vision.
10. SPECIALIST
Don’t wait until your vision becomes blurry. Regular comprehensive eye examinations help detect many eye diseases before symptoms even begin.
These 10 habits make up the eye protocol; we call it 10 super “S”. Small changes in your daily routine can make a big difference to your vision.
