Keratoconus Management

Keratoconus Management in Ahmedabad, Gujarat

An eye condition in which your cornea — the clear, dome-shaped front of your eye gets thinner and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape

Causes
  • Rubbing of eyes
  • Eye allergies
  • Family history
  • Marfans syndrome, ehler danlos syndrome
Symptoms
  • Blurr vision, glare, halos, double or multiple vision
Treatment
  • Corneal collagen cross-linking – To strengthen the cornea and to stop or reduce the rate of progression of keratoconus
  • Topoguided ablation with Corneal collagen cross-linking – in certain cases where thickness allows reshaping of a cone with a strengthening procedure can be done
  • Intracorneal ring segments
  • ROSE K or Mini scleral contact lenses
  • Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty – in severe cases advanced lamellar corneal transplant is done. In this transplant patient’s own posterior corneal layer i.e. endothelial layer is preserved which reduces the chances of rejection of the transplanted graft.

FAQs

Whenever you have blurry vision or excessive glare & halos or if you have high cylindrical power , you should contact your cornea specialist and early keratoconus can be diagnosed with 3 D tomography scans of cornea

Most keratoconus now adays can be treated without corneal transplants. We generally do a corneal strengthening procedure called collagen cross linking followed by corneal or scleral contact lenses for visual rehabilitation.

In advanced cases we may need to do deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty which is advanced corneal transplant where patients most posterior corneal layer i.e. endothelium is preserved to reduce graft rejection chances and better graft survival rates.

Keratoconus doesnot typically cause total blindness.

Yes, in approximately 90 % cases it is bilateral, however onset, grade of severity & rate of progression could be asymmetrical.
