Dry eyes are when your eyes either don’t produce enough tears to keep your eyes moisturized or tears evaporate excessively, making your eyes feel uncomfortable.

There are a number of causes. It could be local/systemic or environmental/ professional.

Some of the causes like exposure to dust/wind constantly, prolonged hours of digital screen use, chronic contact lens wear, hormonal changes in women especially menopause, eye conditions like lagophthalmos, thyroid eye disorder, and meibomian gland dysfunction.

Also some of the systemic causes like Rheumatoid arthritis, Scleroderma, Sjogren’s syndrome, Lupus, Steven’s Johnson syndrome, and Cicatricial pemphigoid.

It does cause intermittent blurry & fluctuating vision. It not only affects vision but also reduces quality of life.

It causes glare n halos from the headlights of vehicles and street lamps.

  1. Avoid dust/wind exposure
  2. Wear protective glasses for the outdoors to avoid dust and evaporation
  3. Use lubricating eye drops
  4. Apply the 20-20-20 rule while on the computer i.e. take 20 seconds break every 20 minutes to look 20 feet away.
  5. Do not sleep with contact lenses in the eye.
  6. Remove eye make properly at the end of the day.

There are a number of tests like slit lamp examination, staining of eyes, Schirmer test, non-invasive breakup time, imaging of Meibomian glands and lipid layer examination. With the help of these, we can diagnose as well as quantify the severity of dry eye disease.

Besides topical & systemic medicines and punctal plugs, we have IrPL i.e. Intense regulated pulse light. This is used mainly in MGD (Meibomian gland disease). This therapy helps to increase tear secretion.
