Paediatric ophthalmology deals with treating various eye problems affecting children like
Squint – Where the eye points in different directions.
Paediatric cataract – cataract or lens opacification. It could be by birth or sometimes due to trauma.
Amblyopia – Lazy eye
Myopia progression – constant increase in the number
In a normal circumstances it is a good idea to get your child’s eye test done at around 3 years to rule out any spectacle power. However if you notice your child is not seeing well or there is white reflex from your child’s eye or there is any kind of discharge or opacity one should seek eye test as soon as possible.
Yes. If your child has spectacle power and if it is prescribed by your eye doctor it is required to wear glasses so that your child will see clearly and also it helps in preventing amblyopia i.e. lazy eye.
There are various therapies like low strength atropine eye drops, multifocal glasses etc to prevent or slow down myopia progression, however it doesn’t gurantee prevention. Your doctor will discuss in detail with you before starting this treatment.
Squint can be treated with glasses, eye exercise and in some cases one needs surgical repair of it.
